Ideas .............

For my title sequence, i had the idea of having the whole the thing in black and white except for the scene with dripping blood. i would like to have the scenes contiuosly switching just like the title sequence of "the ring" does. I have planned the title sequence step by step but will probably change it as the idea progresses. Below is my step by step plan which i intend my title sequence to resemble;

A Jewllery box with a Ballerina turning aound will be the starting scence. As the music begins the scence will feature the names and title.

It will then skip to one of the locations in the title sequence. This will be an abandoned room, the place we have found to film this is a damp and disgusting shower room. The next scene will be of this shower room and as the camera zooms out showing the surroundings, it will then progress into a model of the room.

The camera contiues zooming out and as the scene progresses it will slowly zoom out showing the killers hands making the model. You wont see the killer just his hands and him wearing leather gloves.

The next seen reverts back to colour and shows blood dripping in a sink and as it falls into the water it will expand. In order to make the blood I intend to research it as the title sequence progresses.

It then progresses to the model, made by the killer of the places he is keeping his victims.

As it zooms into the model it changes into the room where it zooms out, showing a possible dead body and another victim tied to a chair. The camera slowly zooms into her face showing her crying and the effect of her mascara running down her face.

The next scene is two people running down a long and dark corridor with a light at the end. A girl then falls and gets dragged away as the other one continues to run away.

The title sequence then progresses and flicks to each scene quickly.

It then goes fuzzy. Grey as if you were getting the effect of someone changing the channel, and as the camera zooms out of t.v set, revealing a room and someone sitting at a table with leather gloves as a jewellery box with a ballerina turning ends the title sequence.

The music I would like to use would be the music from a jewellery box, i chose this idea because i didnt want the music to be outragous, just simple and different.

Cape Fear

Anatomy of a murder

Vertigo

Psycho

Saul Bass

For my Thriller title sequences, i wanted to research some ideas and popular title sequences. I decided to research Saul Bass, who desighned title sequences and collaborated with famous film directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Martin Scorsese.

Saul Bass' work consist of famous title sequences such as;

  • Psycho

  • Goodfellas

  • Cape Fear

  • Vertigo

  • Ocean's Eleven

  • Anatomy of a murder
When I looked at these title sequences, I noticed how you can straight away tell the title sequences was the work of Saul Bass. I like the way Saul Bass changes his ideas contiously and changes the materials he uses. For example, the title sequences; Psycho and Oceans eleven were both animated compared to Cape Fear and Goodfellas. Each have their own indivual features that creates the right opening and effect to begin the film.

The one thing i noticed about the title sequences is that they all keep moving continuosly, for example in the title sequence of Psycho you follow the shapes which lead in to the words they make and it makes your eyes follow whats happening.
I like the way Saul Bass' work is different to other title sequences. In ways he creates suspense for the film but without giving the plot of the film away. My favourite title sequence by Saul Bass would be Anatomy of a murder, i like the imagery used and i have studied this title sequence before in a Graphics lesson. I guess when u hear the title Anatomy of a murder, you associate the white line you get around a dead body at a murder scene, which is the idea you get from seeing this title sequence.

Saul Bass' work uses very little colour and simple imagery, I like how the colours he combines together creates the perfect effect that he is trying to create and gives the idea of "legibility of colours.He also uses simple music which builds up as the title sequence progresses almost the effect as if the suspense is building up.

I also like the Typography he uses its different for each film and varies with what genre the film is. When making my title sequence i would like to create a similar effect with the typography. Keeping it simple but different and connecting it with the genre of the film.

The ring

I decided to add the title sequence of The ring because it had similar music to which i would like to use in my Thriller. I also like the way its dark and flips from different clips. The music has a scratchy effect and sounds like it could be similar to the tune of a childrens music box. I think the white typography against the black background works well, it adds a dark and mysterios look and you can predict that somethink might occure by the way the music changes, and the typography flickers. Another thing i notice at the end which i like is the way the blank screens as if someone has just turned the film off.

Saw

I added a clip from the film Saw.I intended to post the title sequence but i found that this clip of the trailer showed the idea better of the way I want my film to keep changing to other scenes in the title sequence continuosly. I think the lighting is good in this trailer.It flips from dark to light, the scenes show varios clips which straight away get the audience interested in the film. I also intend to find a sound clip of the famous tune which is associated with all of the Saw films. I would like to do this because for my Thriller I intend to have the sound of a music box as the tune which will be associated with this film.
